I am searching for descendents of my uncle Edmund John Newton and his wife Martha Ann (nee Dawson) who were married at Armley Church in 1917 and who, for many years, lived in Winchester Mount.

Edmund was my father Percy Newton's brother. He also had brothers Harry, George and Archibald and three sisters, Eva, Mary and Dorothy Diamond Victoria. Mary and Dorothy both died in childhood.

Edmund and Martha had a son Leslie, a daughter Doris and grandchildren.
Leslie lived on Heights Drive and it was there that Edmund died in 1964 after spending some time in Kirkdene nursing home, Kirkstall.

Martha died before Edmund, also in 1964, at their home on Winchester Mount.

Edmund and Martha are buried in New Wortley Cemetery.

Any information that would help me trace family members would be most welcome.

I am trying to find out about my family who lived around Lower Wortley from from about 1900 to 1990. Our surname is Robinson.

My Uncle George lived in Blackpool Terrace as did my grandfather John before him. My father Peter moved to Bristol in the early 60's.

My fathers Uncle Arthur had a small holding I think on Lower Wortley Road, it was affectionately known as the Pondarossa. I hope somebody can help.

You recently published a request for any information regarding my grandparents Robert and Emma Richardson.

I have now been contacted a distant cousin who has been able to furnish me with a family tree. The Richardsons trace back to 1696 in Pocklington, Yorkshire.

Thank you for your help.

Most of my mother's family came from Farnley. People may remember my great-uncle Sam Wigglesworth of Moor Top Farm in the 50s and early 60s, married to Sadie Roberts. He had previously been a rhubarb farmer at Park Side Farm.

My grandmother was Agnes Wigglesworth whose father Benjamin was a farmer in Low Moor Side in 1871/1881, at Carr Hall, Spring View, Gildersome in 1891 and then at a farm on Walsh Lane in 1901.

Her mother was Lydia Murgatroyd who came from a large family also living in Low Moor Side.

My grandfather was Harold Jagger with a brother called Lewis and a sister called Emma. He's in the 1891 census living at 1 Furnace Row and then I can't find him again until 1914 when he married my grandmother.

Can anyone throw any light on any of these names or places? Is the Farnley Local History Group still in existence?

I'm currently researching my Carradice family tree here in Wigan.

But I have come across a Carradice who apparently died in Wortley in 1910. I don't know why he was there but his wife has stayed here and also died here.

He is Harry Kearsley Carradice (my great-grandad) born 1869 and he was married to Edith Emma Cross.

On 1901 census they lived at Foy street wigan, he was a house painter.

Please can anyone do a search for me, to find out the cause of death and where he is buried. Thank you.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has any information on any of the Milner family up to the mid-1800s, who lived in Wortley, particularly any information on who they married ie their maiden names.

I know that they worked in the cloth trade and lived near St John's church at one point.

Anything about the social history of the area, which might be relevant, from that time would be great too.

I would love to be put in touch with the Society or anyone else who can furnish me with more details of the fireclay pit in Wortley where several generations of my family (Surnames are all PEACE) worked from 1830-1920.

Is there any old footage, old photographs or records of employment relating to the pit that I would be able to see?

I am an ex Leeds guy now living in the USA and have a great deal of my ancestry in Wortley and the surrounding Leeds area.
At present I am trying to locate anything that will give me details of my third G Grandmother's family.

On the 1841 Census I believe that they were living in Town St and are as follows:

Hannah Cooper 50
Sarah Cooper 20 Dressmaker
Samuel Cooper 15 Ag Labourer
Mary Cooper 15 Cloth Burler
John Cooper 7
Joseph Cooper 5

Does anyone have the time to see if they can find anything about this family prior to 1841?

Any help is very much appreciated,

I really hope that someone may be able to help me. I am trying to trace my father, or to have some information about him. His name was Kenneth Golding and he married my mother, Ruth Cowen, from Newcastle, in Wortley in April, May or June of 1943. Because of the place of marriage, I am assuming that he may have come from the Wortley area. On my birth certificate in 1944, he is described as a private in the Pioneer Corps and a monumental mason. They had another daughter in 1946 and were divorced some time after that although I have not found a date for that yet. I wonder whether there are any "Goldings" in the Wortley area who may have knowledge of him.

I'm an Aussie who is presently trying to do some family research via Ancestry.com (like so many others!). Most of my family on my paternal grandmother's branch of the family tree were either born in the Leeds area or moved there from Newark, Notts. at some stage, residing mainly in Armley, Wortley or Bramley, and some were still there when Nan visited there from Australia in 1987.

Nan was born in Leeds, but her family migrated to Sydney in 1911 - she died in 1993 (before any of us got a real interest in finding out about the family history, unfortunately) so that last living link between the two countries has gone, and sadly the only address I have is for a wife of one of her cousins, and she too is now deceased.
I'd really appreciate any advice you could give me!
